This is an extraordinary story of a two people who are separated by time and space. It shows how painful it could be to be apart to the person you loved the most and only connected to him/her by a few cellphone text messages which eventually took months and even years to arrive as their distance to each other grew longer.
Mikako joins an expedition force and leaves Earth to search for and defeat races of invading aliens. As she travels deeper into the space, her only communication with her earth-bound boyfriend Noboru which was through cellphone text messages becomes rare. A single text-message could take half a year to arrive, what more if she's several light years far away. While Noboru grows older and meets other people, he never gives up and believes he'll be with Mikako again and Mikako as well.
Despite it's short length, Hoshi no Koe was very successful and even made head turns. It's unique visual styles was very impressive. Although the character designs weren't that good, the animator, Makoto Shinkai(which happens to be the same creator of 5 Centimeters per Second) was able to cover his shortcomings by using vibrant colors for his work. It's almost very realistic in a way. You can also see the similarities with 5 Centimeters in terms of animation. Just that the character designs were much improved in 5 Centimeters per second.
I highly recommend to watch this one. It's just thirty minutes but it's worth it. You won't regret. It's a great masterpiece. :D
