How to Extract Audio from a Video

Posted by Hana Piers on Thursday, August 28, 2008

Requirement:

1. MediaCoder or MKVToolnix

in Mediacoder:

Assuming you already open your video on Mediacoder. Make sure on the Audio tab that Enable

Audio
and Copy Audio checkbox is ticked.

Now on Transcode menu, select "Transcode Audio Only". Wait for a few seconds and you'll see the audio

file on your output folder.

in MKVToolnix

Now when you install MKV toolnix. There are two programs you can use. Either MKVExtract or

MKVMerge.
I will use MKVMerge even though MKVExtract is much more appropriate.

Open your video file then on the "Tracks" section, you'll see 2 tracks, one from audio and from video. If your

video has soft subtitle, you'll also see the subtitle track there. Now tick the audio track checkbox.

On the File menu, select Set Output File. Change the Save as type: as All Files then name your

the output file to audioname.mp3 or simply name the audio to "audioname.mp3" including the quotation

marks. This is to make sure your audio won't have .mkv extension.

Lastly, on the Muxing Menu, select Start Muxing.
It'll only take a few seconds to extrack the audio.

So now you have the mp3 audio, if you compare it with the audio the Mediacoder transcoded, it's just the same in filesize since MC only stream copied the audio.
